David J. Adams -- Accreditation, Planning, and Editorial Services

Dave Adams holds an M.F.A. from Bowling Green State University, and is a consulting technical writer with over 30 years of experience in the teaching and practice of technical communication. He has developed, and taught in, successful engineering communication programs at Cornell University, Michigan State University, and the University of Maine. He has also had a diverse consulting career, specializing with assisting institutions with issues and reporting related to accreditation, including accreditation self-studies, interim reports and substantive change documents. He has proven adept at solving complex problems in technical communication with creativity and attention to detail
Adams is author of COPE: A Technical Writing Guide for Engineers, 2nd Ed. (Pearson Custom, 2007) ISBN: 0-536-08401-7, and he has recently published his seventh book of poetry, Room for Darkness, Room for Light: New & Selected Poems 1972-2008 (Blue Shale Books, 2009). Adams is a senior member of the Society of Technical Communication (STC) and a member of the Council for Programs in Technical and Scientific Communication (CPTSC).
Accreditation and Degree Authorization Projects
Since 1992, Prof. Adams has served as consultant and editor for fifteen (15) institutional self-studies and interim reports at institutions of higher education undergoing regional accreditation review (including four and two year colleges). All received full terms of accreditation. He recently concluded assignments as self-study consultant at the College of the Marshall Islands and Northern Marianas College.
He has led numerous special accreditation projects and reports including:
- Served as writer, editor and process consultant for eight successful self studies with five different institutions;
- Wrote and edited a successful planning self study for an institution moving to a higher degree offering, as well as numerous mid-term and focused visit reports;
- Designed a report format to meet regional accreditation requirements for reporting assessment results;
- Conducted mock interviews to prepare an institution for a site visit;
- Revised a college catalog to meet accreditation standards.
His other experiences include designing innovative and successful programs in writing instruction ranging from developmental to graduate level. He has particular experience in designing successful programs to integrate writing instruction in majors, particularly in engineering colleges. In addition, has carried out a variety of other consulting projects, including the following:
- Directed a comprehensive communications audit of a two-year college;
- Conducted vision and mission workshops;
- Performed an educational audit of six MBA programs;
- Developed a career-based communications center for international students;
- Designed and edited a Manual for Planning, Program Review and Budget.
- Designed and edited a dissertation manual for an Educational Leadership program.
- Edited a Faculty Manual, as well as numerous research proposals.
